Lord's Prayer #4 "Give us this day our daily bread"

October 31, 2016

I heard Matsuda sensei's 4 boys used to eat a great deal.  4 teenagers must have consumed a tons of food.  I kind of know that situation because I also ate enormously; more than twice as other average adults have eaten. I did not gain any weight, though.  I was almost always hungry. Appetite and hunger are basic desires of human life. In the Lord's Prayer, Jesus taught us to ask for daily bread, “Give us this day our daily bread”.  What does it mean by, “our daily bread”, and  also by “Give us this day”?  What did Jesus want us to do through this specific prayer.

In the Lord's Prayer, the first 3 prayers are about God, and this 4th prayer is about our personal need – the food in our everyday life.

1. Daily Bread

Bread means all foods we eat - old days in Japan, people did not eat bread so much... they only ate rice. So we don't translate it as BREAD, rather we say “Kate”  means all the foods including cooked rice ”Gohan”.

Bakers bake fresh bread every morning.  1 day old bread has no value. Fresh each day is important.

Bread in this prayer here has more meanings.  Martin Luther said, Bread here includes food, drink, clothes, shoes, house, land, yard, farm animals, government, climate, peace, health, and all those things needed in our daily life. Those include necessities, problems, worries, and troubles.

We  may ask our Lord for all those things.

They all are our necessities; we need them everyday in order to sustain our life.  They are not luxurious things... Remember not to ask Lord for Maserati, 50-foot Yacht, mansion in Beverly Hills. We simply ask Lord for our everyday food and necessary things.

Lord knows what you need, yet He tells us to ask for them.  (Luke 11:9)

“So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.

Lord Jesus is merciful and kind. He takes care of you and all you needs.  When Jesus fed 5000 people, his intention was shown in Mark 6:34 He was full of compassion for the people,

“34 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them,

Jesus has compassion on you today.  He wants to give you your daily necessities. Your food, drink, clothes, shoes, house, peace, health.... You just ask Him.  Through asking Him you'll have a great fellowship with Him.  Just like when you were very little, you asked your mother (or father) for something you wanted.  She probably knew what you needed, but she enjoyed the conversation with you. Have a good relationship and fellowship with your parents, and the same way with your God. That 's what Jesus wants from you.  “Ask and it will be given to you.”

2. This Day – Today.

Not tomorrow or the day after tomorrow, or a month later.  Jesus said specifically “this day” that is today.  Every single day is important, each day is special. Each day we do a new thing.  Jesus also said in  Matthew 6:34

“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

Jesus said, “Do not worry about tomorrow.”  this word comforts us a great deal.

We worry very much, especially when things are not going well.  Most of us don't worry about our past so much, but we tend to worry about tomorrow.  “What will happen?  How can I face it?  What to do tomorrow?”

When I was in a business, I worried a lot about the job, human relationship, business, money.  Most of everyone here knows what I mean. You also worry some tmes, don't you.”

Even Martin Luther worried a lot. His anecdote is...

Martin Luther was facing lots of problems.  He was the only one against entire Roman Catholic, including Pope and the Emperor in Rome.  Challenging their wrong religious belief and faulty teachings.  .. such like, the indulgence - pay money, then you can go to heaven. Wwwwwrong.

Luther could be killed any time for what he was doing, protesting against the Emperor.  So he was everyday in distress.  His wife...by the way he married a woman called, Katharina. It was very unique at his time that priests married, besides they both were in monasteries.

One day his wife quietly came into his room with a total black dress – mourning attire.

Martin was surprised and asked her, ”having a funeral? who is dead? ”

She replied, “Your God is dead.” “What do you mean?” he asked again. “Your God must be dead because you have such a saddening face.” she replied.

Martin was shown how much he was in distress... worrying too much.  He then gain power again to go on to fight for the righteousness.  God is with you, be brave and courageous.  In Joshua 1: 9 it says

9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”  He will fight for you.

Everyone worries some time or others because we are human with human nature.  Jesus also said, in Matthew 6:25

25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? “

Do not worry, Jesus said.  Look at birds of the air; they do not sow, or reap, or store crops, but they live well because God feeds them and takes care of them.  Birds do not worry about tomorrow – we suppose

– I don't know birds' mind, not being a one.  But for sure, they are taken care of by the Lord.

Jesus in His prayer teaches us, not to worry.  Worrying is doing nothing but hurting yourself.  If you tend to worry more than others.  This prayer is especially for you.  Our Lord will take care of you, and your need.  Have peace, and relax. Stay focus on Jesus. Then you will be Ok.  Do you know that 90% of things you worry never actually happen.  So do not worry.

3. One day at the time - Day by day...Last lesson in the prayer.

Our Christian life is also an accumulation of our daily life.  We are growing in faith one step at a time... getting closer to the Lord day by day.  We need to read the Bible daily, study the Word of God everyday.

Important thing is we learn many things day by day.  Sports are the same; you need to practice daily.  If you want to be a good athlete.  Your daily practice is essential.  Your faith is also the same.  Day by day get closer to the Lord Jesus, by daily practicing Christian life; praying day and night, read the Scripture everyday, and going to church every Sunday... not Everyday.  Unless you are a pastor like me.

Have a great day, be with Jesus, have peace with Him.  He will take away all your worries.
